Unexpected fun

Lately Mac has been afraid of the water. As an infant she was cool with swimming but as she got older a fear developed. We didn't force swimming on her but kept giving her opportunities to give it a go if she was ready. By the way, how do you balance giving your kids encouragement to try things without being disrespectful of their fears?

Today we went to a local park that has a wading pool and while she took awhile to find her courage to get in she eventually did. All she wanted to do was get her legs wet, not sit or lay in the water or anything like that. Well, as things happen another little girl (Bunny Mae, real name) accidentally pushed Mac into the water and she went almost all the way under. I was expecting crying and screams but tried to give her a poker face as I picked her up and sure enough, she thought it was the best thing ever. So we spent another hour or so at the park enjoying the water. Sometimes you just need a little push to help you along!

I actually think the sudden fear of water is pretty common. Izze and Kiran both went through it. Izze suddenly refused to take a bath, and we spent about a month giving her a bath in her baby tub and then transitioning back into the tub with ME in it... not fun. I like Mac's way to get over the fear MUCH better! Just hang in there.

Gabe had the same deal. He was totally into water most of his whole life. Then he was deathly afraid of it for like 3 months. And now he's on about water again: *loves it*. No apparent rhyme or reason.

But it's nice that their love of water is coinciding for our trip here. The two of them spent a totally adorable 20 minutes this morning playing with my bath water. They didn't get in (I like my baths hot!) but they just had a ball splashing and playing with the floating toys.
